The minutes of the meeting held on 27 June 2018 were agreed as a correct record and signed by the Chair.

Local policing update

Verbal update

Minutes:

Inspector Christine Busuttil and Inspector Rob Wilson, Nottinghamshire Police, provided an update on crime and policing in the Berridge and Sherwood wards, highlighting the following:

 

Sherwood

 

(a)  there has been a reduction in overall crime in the ward of 49. Theft has increased including shoplifting and this is being prioritised, however burglary, vehicle offences and anti-social behaviour are all down;

(b)  a warrant was enacted recently to seize a large amount of cannabis worth £270,000;

(c)  two offenders have been recently jailed for 15 years for a spate of burglaries in 2017/18 all around the Sherwood ward;

(d)  a schools officer has been employed to work with children in school and prevent crime.

 

Berridge

 

(e)  crime over the ward has reduced this year following a high level last year, with much less vehicle crime;

(f)  a warrant was enacted recently to seize a significant amount of cannabis;

(g)  the closure order on The Stage Hotel has been extended until Christmas;

(h)  Inspector Wilson is retiring and will be replaced by Inspector Riz Khan for neighbourhood policing.

 

Rupinder Kooner, Senior Community Protection Officer, provided a verbal update on Community Protection, providing Community Representatives and Councillors with the numbers of Fixed Penalty Notices, Community protection Notice Warnings and Community Protections that have been issued across the two wards. Community Protection have also dealt with a number of messy gardens, fly-tips and trade waste issues.

Report of the Chief Executive of Nottingham City Homes

Wade Adams, Area Housing Manager, Nottingham City Homes (NCH), introduced the report providing updates on key issues and themes which link back to local priorities and the strategic themes for NCH, highlighting the following:

 

(a)  the final coat of render is being installed on Woodthorpe Court and insulation is being installed on Winchester Court;

(b)  NCH won the TPAS National Award for Excellence in Tenant Engagement 2018;

(c)  NCH contact tenants to discuss issues like Universal Credit and supporting them to get benefits that they didn’t realise they were entitled to;

(d)  minimum bedroom sizes have been set but these are only for Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and will not affect family homes.

Area Based Grant - Area 5 Progress report pdf icon PDF 310 KB

Report of the Business Development Manager, NG7 Training, Employment and Advice

Minutes:

Jawaid Khalil, NG7 Training, Employment and Advice, introduced the report providing progress on the Area Based Grant (ABG) for the Berridge and Sherwood wards, highlighting the following:

 

(a)  the ABG is split into four priorities: Employment and Skills Support, Young People, Support for Community Infrastructure and Support for the Local Voluntary and Community Sector;

(b)  NG7 has met or exceeded all its targets in all areas, including double the target for the number of job clubs and double the target for voluntary groups that have been supported;

(c)  English for Speaker of Other Language (ESOL) classes have been very successful at supporting citizens into work.

 

RESOLVED to note the three year delivery plan and update on progress and performance data for 2018/19, for the Area Based Grant by the appointed area based lead organisation.

Rob Bain, Finance Director, Robin Hood Energy (RHE), delivered a verbal update on the work of RHE, highlighting the following:

 

(a)  the company was established in 2014 and was the first publicly owned not for profit energy company in the UK. It was originally conceived to help tackle fuel poverty in Nottingham City;

(b)  RHE now serves over 115,000 customers across the UK taking in customers from an extended partnership of white label companies and other local authorities;

(c)  RHE has been much more successful than other ‘start up’ energy companies and has already achieved a profit within the first three years. Loans from the council to start the company are being repaid at commercial rates;

(d)  there are a wide range of tariffs available including green energy tariffs and a reduced tariff for city residents. Average savings for city residents are around £153 compared to standard prepay tariffs;

(e)  customers’ tariffs are regularly reviewed to ensure that they are the most suitable. Now that the company is achieving profit it has voluntarily joined the warm home discount scheme and fuel vouchers are regularly sent to food banks across the city to help the most vulnerable.

 

Community Representatives suggested that local community and voluntary organisations could partner RHE to educate citizens on energy saving. Councillors also praised the good customer service at RHE and said that it is good for vulnerable citizens.
