Dear Mr Robinson,

The YMCA are the current provider of our 12 week Physical Activity on Referral service which has been in place in the city for around a decade. They have done some great work over the years, helping people in Nottingham to become more active through a dedicated referral system.

The YMCA ran this service through several exercise sessions across the city, through which referred clients could participate in exercise as part of the 12 week programme to set goals and become more confident in being physically active. This was part of the service funded by the city council. The YMCA enabled clients to continue to attend these exercise classes after they had finished the 12 week exercise programme for a small financial contribution. This was a good development, but not something that the city council funded and was therefore not responsible for.

The contract for the Physical Activity on Referral Scheme ends in March 2017 due to the need to re commission all healthy lifestyle services. This is because the whole Healthy Lifestyle programme commissioned by Nottingham City Council has been redrawn. The individual contracts for the various services within it (including the YMCA one) had to be retendered by law and it was an opportunity for us to see if we could make the overall programme better and more inclusive.

The YMCA did not bid for this new service and therefore are not in a position to provide the new service. YMCA have also ended the exercise sessions for people who had finished the Physical Activity on Referral service which was not something funded by the city council.
I am pleased to tell you that following the tender, the City Council working closely with NHS colleagues, has commissioned an exciting new healthy weight service, which will help local people to be more active, eat better and ultimately achieve and maintain a healthy weight. This new service will be called Why Weight and is run by Everyone Health.
This new service will be working with Nottingham City Council Sport and Leisure Service, and other local organisations, to signpost local people to the many local opportunities in the city to exercise and socialise in their locality. While the YMCA classes that you have enjoyed attending may be coming to an end, there are a number of alternatives available across the city.

Yours sincerely,
