Paper petition details

Wilford Parking

We are asking that the council reduce the operating time of the Wilford Village residents parking scheme to only operate 10am to 3pm which would still prevent commuter parking, which the community was seeking to prevent, and make it safer for children travelling to and from the local schools.

The recently implemented parking restrictions in Wilford Village were intended to reduce commuter parking. However, the operating time of the restrictions between 9 am and 5 pm has negatively impacted families attending our local schools. That includes both those walking and driving to school, and the ability to get children to school safely. This needs to be reviewed urgently.

On reaching 1 signatures the head of the relevant department will be made aware of the matter.

Council response

Thank you for your petition submitted to Nottingham City Council on 29th June 2021 highlighting concerns with the above schemes’ operational hours. Firstly, I’m very sorry that you are experiencing difficulties with parking at peak school times. This is a difficult situation and one that is unfortunately a common occurrence in the vicinity of many schools across the city and indeed up and down the country.

The desired outcome of your petition is for the Council to change the operational hours of the recently introduced scheme to accommodate travel to the local schools. Prior to completing the statutory consultation process for introducing a Traffic Regulation Order, the proposals were also discussed at community groups with your local councillors. I hope this assures you a thorough and robust consultation process was carried out before any highway changes were made. Throughout the consultation process and where possible, feedback was incorporated into the final scheme. The proposals included limited waiting for periods of up to three hours in some bays adjacent to South Wilford Endowed School and four hours in the car park adjacent to St Patrick’s School. As the lead petitioner, you may be aware changes were made to some of these bays to allow a dual use of limited waiting and both permits to allow residents to park near to their homes.

Unfortunately, inconsiderate and unsafe parking does take place during peak school hours across the city which is why we regulate parking outside schools for a safe pick up and drop off. As mentioned, the schools in this location do have the facility of some limited waiting bays and although the capacity may not meet the demand, we also recognise the urgency to support climate change and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The government has many policies on how children should travel to and from school and we fully accept walking is not always an option for all parents hence us incorporating limited waiting bays. Several discussions have taken place in relation to this and the outcome is for the area to be monitored for its effectiveness. Should any changes be required in the future, the full statutory process will be carried out.

I understand you may be disappointed in my response to your request to amend the current operational times but hopefully you will agree that new parking schemes can be a contentious issue and the reorganisation of any environmental factor must include the cooperation of the people it is meant to benefit.

Finally, may I thank you again for bringing these matters to our attention
