grave memorial removal

We the undersigned petition the council to reconsider the removal of memorials from graves at southern cemetery wilford hill

please reconsider the decision to remove memorial gifts from the graves of our loved ones at wilford hill cemetery as this is deeply distressing for the families and loved ones of the deceased especially the baby graves as this is the only way to celebrate their short lives by giving them little gifts on birthdays and christmas if they are not on the grass they are not hurting anyone or causing any health and safety issues as implied in the notice there are hundreds of damaged sunken neglected graves which need addressing not the ones which are cared for by family and loved ones this is causing unneccessary stress and grief to already grieving families

Council response

PETITION –Grave Memorial Removal

I am writing to you in response to the above petition.

Nottingham City Council understands that bereaved families may wish to leave gifts for their lost loved ones, and the bereavement service continues to work with families to do this whilst ensuring that access to enable essential grounds maintenance and/or further burials to take place remain. The areas where gifts are located which can be problematic are the grassed areas, and it is here we liaise with families to ask for these to be moved. We recognise that the design of the lawn grave does not provide a designated area to leave gifts and where we can we work with families to provide non-grassed area options such as an official half kerb set which then gives the family space to place items within a designated and controlled area that doesn’t impede these grounds works.

Nottingham Bereavement services continue to work with all families who have graves within our Cemeteries to ensure that the sites are maintained to a high standard, and remain accessible, for all.

Yours sincerely
