Police and Community Protection Updates

Minutes:

Nottinghamshire Police Inspectors Khan and Walker, and Senior Community Protection Officer Scott Clancy, updated the Committee on policing matters in the wards, including crime and arrest figures, local initiatives to address crime and anti-social behaviour, actions in respect of ongoing issues, and current Police and Community Protection areas of focus.

A number of questions and comments arose in discussion, and further information was provided:

(a)  a recent stabbing in the Meadows area involved people not local to the area, and an arrest has been made. It is not believed to be part of any tensions or trends and was contained to a single incident;

(b)  one phone box which was frequently used for illegal activity has been removed, and others have been identified. Other solutions for remaining phone boxes in the area are being investigated by BT – such as removing shelves and doors, and disabling the ability to accept incoming calls. The Committee wished to extend their thanks to the Police, Community Protection and the NDOs for their excellent work together on this issue;

(c)  a number of thefts have taken place from one shop in the University ward, and the Police are attempting to work with the shop owners to increase security measures in the store;

(d)  a knife amnesty will be taking place, and locations of all knife bins can be found on the Nottinghamshire Police website: https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/news-article/operation-sceptre-growing-community-support-boosts-knife-amnesty;

(e)  some Committee members felt that a separate Sergeant is needed for the Meadows and for Sneinton areas;

(f)  some students studying criminology or sociology have been recruited as Student Ambassador Volunteers, to accompany CPOs on patrol and help them engage with students. Visits will no longer just focus on preventing students from becoming victims of crime, but also of informing students of their responsibilities to their local communities with relation to noise, ASB, alcohol consumption and proper disposal of rubbish.

RESOLVED to note the updates.

Good News Stories - Community Representatives

Minutes:

The following Community Representatives reported on local items of interest:

(a)  Kate Loewenthal of the Lenton Drives & Neighbours Residents’ Association invited the Committee to attend the community fun day festival, and to bring all of their neighbours and friends. The event was originally due to be held in June, and will now be held on Saturday 28 September. Kate extended her thanks to Councillors and Castle Cavendish for funding the event, and to Fi Cusick and the other NDOs for all of their help. She also reported that the local CPO does an outstanding job. He keeps an eye on everything and the team does a huge amount, for which local residents are very grateful;

(b)  Jane Jeoffrey of the Queen’s Walk Community Association reported that they had received funding towards new tables, with a lot of help from Chris Brommitt. She also reported that the Meadows Dance and Social Group had received £5,000 worth of funding to help arrange a social mixer, some trips, and a dance tutor;

(c)  Liz Vivyen of the Memorial Gardens Association reported that the new organisation had recently worked with Nottingham City Council for some Heritage Lottery funding for the memorial gardens. The contractors for the WW1 memorial, Lindum Group, donated £500 to the memorial gardens association, which will be used for extra planting in the garden. Hundreds of snowdrops have recently been planted, which will look brilliant in the spring;

(d)  Miriam Gifford of the Bridges Community Trust reported that the renovated bandstand looks superb, and at the first performance since its renovation, the acoustics were fabulous. More events will be held next year;

(e)  Sylvia Taylor of the Wollaton Park Residents Association reported that the Park is applying for a Green Flag Award. Funding is being sought for more boxes and planters on railings and some raised beds so that people with mobility issues can also be involved in planting. The AGM will be held on Saturday 21 September 2019.

RESOLVED to note the updates and thank the Community Representatives for their contributions.
