All 55 City Councillors meet together as the
City Council. The City Council agrees
the over-arching policies and strategies of the Council, known as
the ‘policy framework’, and sets the Council’s
budget and the level of council tax. It
is also responsible for setting and amending the Council’s
Constitution; electing and removing the Leader of the Council; and
establishing and appointing the membership of the various
committees of the Council.
Meetings are usually held in the Council
House, Old Market Square and are chaired by the Lord
Mayor. Meetings are open to the public
and members of the public can submit questions in advance for
response at a City Council meeting.
Councillors submit petitions to the City Council on behalf of local
people.
The City Council usually meets 6 times a
year.
